Launched in 2013, the new V Range was introduced with more than one thousand upgrades over the previous models, the result of three years of intensive design and testing by Johnston engineering team to bring to the market a product which makes sweeping more efficient, cost effective and friendly to the environment than ever before. Since then Johnston Sweepers has delivered thousands of V Range, to over fifty countries across the world and the sweeper has established itself as the benchmark against which other truck mounted road sweepers are measured.

The VT651 remains at the heart of Johnston sweeper range, produced at the company award-winning UK operation in Dorking, Surrey.  The 13-acre site was developed in 2014, following an £11m investment in the very latest facilities and production processes, aimed at establishing the most modern sweeper manufacturing facility in the world.  It's an impressive set-up, and the plant has gone on to receive various environmental awards for its design and processes.

The environmental impact of the machines themselves in terms of dust capture, noise, fuel economy and water conservation, is just as high a priority, helping authorities to meet their environmental targets and saving them money.  Power to the V651 auxiliary engine is supplied by the cleanest and most efficient engines available, which already meet future Tier 4 emissions legislation, and to increase dust capture and conserve water Johnston sweepers include a Water Recirculation System, which retains the very smallest dust particles within the body of the machine. The result is that Johnston V Range surpasses the highest standards of PM10 legislation anywhere in the world, including Dust Certification to the US South Coast Air Quality Management District Rule 1186, as well as the maximum 3-star certification against European Standard 15429-3.  Water usage is also cut by up to 350,000 litres a year, making significant savings on metered water-filling costs and allowing up to 50% longer on-station time. By eliminating the need for regular returns to base for refilling, utilisation is maximised and carbon output is lowered, typically by up to 2 tonnes a year.

Johnston CANBus Data Capture facility, the first in the industry, is proving an invaluable aid for fleet managers in the public and private sectors alike.  The system, fitted as standard across Johnston sweeper range, allows information such as fuel consumption, hours and miles swept and average revs used to be downloaded onto a memory stick via the screen USB port.  This real-time cost and productivity data is increasingly helpful in the monitoring and management of sweeping operations and costs & and allows customers to see the evidence of Johnston claimed fuel savings for themselves.  It can also be used to educate drivers how to manage fuel consumption.  With the latest JCB 55kW engines installed, fuel consumption as low as 3.3 litres per hour for the V651 auxiliary engine is achievable at low revs.  For most municipal operations 1200-1400 revs is more than enough to sweep channels, so being able to monitor and manage the revs is very important.  The difference between operating at high and low revs can be as much as 250 litres per sweeper per week, so monitoring the fuel used and revs through Data Capture can have a huge impact on operating costs - and the environment.
