Johnston wins Mechanical Product of the Year 2012 BEEA Awards

Johnston Sweepers' C201 Compact has been named, "Mechanical Product of the Year" in the British Engineering Excellence Awards (BEEA) for 2012.

The C201, launched last year, was one of two hundred and seventy hopeful entries for the awards, winning in its category for the "significant improvement over the previous product", as considered by the distinguished team of technical experts who formed the judging panel.

The award was presented at a special ceremony held at the prestigeous 8 Northumberland Avenue venue in London, Johnston's design team receiving the award from igus who sponsored the Mechanical Product of the Year category.

The Johnston engineering team responsible for the design of the C201 was also short-listed for the "Design Team of the Year" category, narrowly missing out to Qioptiq for its SAKER weapons sight.

The C201 was launched in 2011 to critical acclaim, having also been named, "Waste and Recycling Vehicle of the Year" in the PAWRS awards earlier this year. The new machine introduced Johnston's revolutionary four wheel steer system, the first and only of its kind in Europe, as well as brand new operational data capture electronics. It is also one of the kindest to the environment, using up to 40% less fuel, exceeding the highest standards of dust capture in the world, and operating at the quiestest noise level for a sweeper in it class.

Clive Offley, Johnston's Director of Engineering, is delighted that the C201 has won the award. "The design of the C201 was technically very challenging for the engineering team, encompassing many complex design changes over the previous model", he says. "The result is a really special machine, exceeding all of today's sweeping demands, in terms of performance, versatility, economy and environmental responsibility. Johnston invests £11 million

Johnston Sweepers is investing £11 million in a new facility to house the entire production and manufacture of all Johnston products at its Dorking plant in Surrey.

The company currently operates from three different sites in the UK inherited over its 108 year history, with compacts produced in Sittingbourne, truck mounted sweepers in Dorking, and Ash Vale specialising in the welding of bodies for the truck range.

Under the new structure, all three sites will be consolidated into a single facility at Dorking, eliminating the complex logistics required to operate the multi-site structure, and strengthening Johnston's operating efficiency. The £11 million project will involve the construction of a new extended facility in Dorking, as well as investment in the latest equipment and technologies.

The new site will create an opportunity to optimise the layout of the Dorking plant and to incorporate new paint, welding, assembly and storage facilities to streamline the production flow. This will enhance operating efficiency to reduce lead times, and also deliver consistency in service and sweeper quality across the product range.

The building project will take place throughout 2013, creating an advanced manufacturing plant with significantly improved efficiency that will enhance the products and services Johnston offers its customers, and strengthen the company's position for the future.

Johnston launches the radical all-new V Range

Longer on-station time than ever, lowest-ever running costs and more than one thousand design upgrades - all powered by an evironmentally-friendly and fuel efficient engine years ahead of its time. These are just some of the ground breaking features of Johnston's new-generation V651, V501 and V801 truck mounted sweeper range.

In a bold move, Johnston Sweepers has completely re-launched its V Range truck mounted sweeper line-up, entirely replacing the current models to bring to the market a product which boasts Johnston's longest-ever on-station work time, even lower running costs and a host of new features to make sweeping more efficient, cost effective and friendly to the environment than ever before.

The new range is the natural evolution of the hugely popular outgoing V650, V500 and V800 models, incorporating literally thousands of customer-led design upgrades as part of Johnston's commitment to customer feedback and design excellence.

The launch of the all-new V651, V501 and V801 follows three years of intensive design and testing by Johnston's engineering team, which has involved re-examining every single component of the V Range to bring the clever new sweepers to market. The range includes the V651 (6.1m3), the V501 (with increased capacity over its predessor at 5.1m3) and the V801 (7.7m3), powered by a range of advanced engine packs from JCB, with hydrostatic drive also available - and, coming soon, a brand new Mechavac mechanical drive system.

Fuel efficient JCB power packs

Power to the acclaimed auxilliary engine system will be supplied by a range of the cleanest and most efficient engines available, designed and built in Britain by JCB. Brand new to the Johnston range, the engines were chosen for their advanced engineering, the 55kW pack already meeting future Tier 4 final emissions legislation - the only engine able to do this in its displacement class without the complication of requiring SCR (Ad-blueTM) after-treatment systems to clean the exhaust system.
The engines deliver even better fuel consumption and lower emissions than ever before, reducing operating costs and helping authorities to improve their air quality scores, whilst also lowering vibration and noise generation for greater operator comfort and less noise pollution.

Even longer on-station work time

One of the most immediately striking features of the new range is the increased on-station work time, made possible by larger water tanks with a 21% increase in capacity on the V651 to 1572 litres (36% on the V501), combined with all-new improved water jets, which make a more intelligent use of the water for maximum dust supression and water conservation.

The jets in the nozzles are now also self-unblocking so that the water system is always ready for action. This, together with an increased hopper capacity on the V501 model from 4.8 m3 to 5.1m3, means fewer returns to base for re-fills and keeps the sweeper out at work for longer.

Data capture monitors sweeping operations

All this improved efficiency and economy can now be tracked by customers for themselves through Johnston's clever Can-bus control system, introduced for the first time on the truck mounted sweeper range having been well-proven on Johnston's compact sweepers. At the heart of the system is a new 7" colour screen which displays all the operational information needed by the driver - including, for the first time, an in-cab water tank gauge - as well as the diagnostic data for safety and maintenance. The screen can be linked to up to four cameras around the sweeper for greater visibilty and safety.
A really invaluable feature of the new system is its data capture facility, which allows information such as fuel consumption and hours swept data to be downloaded to a memory stick via the screen's USB port. This real-time cost and operational information is a facility that fleet operators are finding increasingly valuable in the monitoring and management of sweeping operations and costs - and allows customers to see the evidence of Johnston's claimed fuel savings for themselves!
The controls for the Can-bus system itself are now all located by the grab-rail on the door, supplying ergonomic and easily accessible operation without having to take your eyes off the road, while the old relay box has now gone to make more space inside the cab.

More robust sweepgear

In response to customer feedback, Johnston has also re-engineered the sweepgear of the new range, increasing the durability of parts prone to wear and introducing a common hydraulic motor across the range to simplify maintenance. A labyrinth is also now included on the bottom of the channel brush motor to prevent twine, twigs and nylon packaging material from getting wrapped around the mechanism - a simple solution to a troublesome maintenance issue.
Throughout the sweeper, flexible hydraulic hoses have been replaced by steel pipes which are far more robust, minimise leaks and cool more effectively - as well as being lighter for lower running costs. Even the hoses on the water cooling system have been given a make-over with efficient new push-in fittings in place of the old-style jubilee clips.

Quiet hopper tipping operation
Another customer-led design change is that the hopper can now be tipped for maintenance without the auxilliary engine running, working automatically from the pendant control in the cab. This allows the hopper to be tipped inside a workshop without the noise and emissions from the engine, for a far quieter and safer operation.
These are just a few of the thousands of design enhancements incorporated into the new range from Johnston, says Clive Offley, Johnston's Engineering Director. "Once again, a significant number of the design upgrades introduced with the new range have been customer driven. We recognise that our customers are our best market research resource, and their feedback is at the heart of our design programme", he says.
Graham Howlett, UK Sales Manager, reiterates Johnston's commitment to design excellence, commenting, "With the advanced technology of the latest JCB Tier 4 compliant engine at the heart of the new sweeper range, we have taken all aspects of its design a step even further to maximise performance, payload, fuel consumption and water conservation - and to produce the most cost effective and practical city sweeper on the market."
The new range of sweepers will shortly go into production with orders being taken now for delivery early in 2013.

Introducing the 4.5T GVW C201 Compact

Johnston Sweepers has taken the productivity and efficiency of its latest award-winning C201 Compact sweeper to even greater levels with the introduction of a new 4.5 tonne Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) option.

The 4.5 tonne option increases the payload to 1.7 tonnes, allowing the versatile machine to stay out sweeping for longer, extending on-station work time for maximum productivity.

The new GVW means there are now three weight options on the C201, giving customers full flexibility in their choice of machine. The standard is 4 tonnes, with 3.5 tonnes also available to allow holders of post-1997 issued UK Driving Licences to operate the sweeper without a LGV licence.

The new 4.5 tonne GVW has been approved by the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), and is on sale now as a option on Johnston's C201 Compact sweeper, recently named Waste and Recycling Vehicle of the Year in the 2012 PAWR awards.

Johnston enhances C201 Safety

For the utmost safety, security and comfort of operators, Johnston will now be fitting a three-point seat belt in the latest C201 Compact sweeper, bringing it to automotive standard.

The enhanced seat belt has been introduced in response to requests from our customers, and will be fitted as standard to both the driver and passenger sides of the cab.

More good news is that for machines already in the field a three-point belt can be retro-fitted, with a special kit available through Johnston's Customer Service team on 01306 874606.

C201 models fitted with the new seat belt will go into full production later this summer, with the retro-fit option available in the interim.

Johnston Sweepers' revolutionary new C201 Compact sweeper has been named, "Waste and Recycling Vehicle of the Year" in the Plant and Wastes Recycling Show (PAWRS) awards for 2012.

Johnston was announced the winner at PAWRS' annual awards ceremony in Torquay, staged in conjunction with the Plant and Wastes Recycling Show. The award was presented by Sky Sports presenter, John McDonald, and Louise Haunton of Gullivers Truck Hire Ltd, who sponsored the Waste and Recycling Vehicle of the Year award category.

Johnston Sweepers' innovative new C201 Compact sweeper was launched to the market last year, bringing together a host of ingenious design concepts to transform the look, ride comfort and drive of the machine, as well as all the latest technological advances in dust capture, fuel efficiency and noise reduction.

The result is a state-of-the-art compact sweeper like none other in the market. Johnston Sweepers launches all-new CW201 Compact street washer

Johnston Sweepers has launched a brand new CW201 Compact street washer.

Developed by Johnston engineers as part of the new generation of Compact sweepers, the CW201offers the option of three different spray bars - a 1.5m fixed bar, a 2.1m folding bar and an expanding bar extending to 3.3m for the widest possible wash area. The wash system incorporates an 1800 litre water tank capacity, which delivers 90 litres/minute at 60 bar for really powerful and efficient cleaning of pavements and precincts.

For the first time, the compact washer also offers Johnston's revolutionary new four-wheel steer system, which supplies unprecedented manoeuvrability around parked cars and street furniture, and the clever Glide 2 suspension system for sublime ride quality, available as options in line with other products in the C201 range.

The new machine features all the latest C201 upgrades, including all-new electronics which gives greater control of operations, improved side lockers with extra storage, the latest spacious and stylish C201 cab design and improved water level gauge. STOP PRESS: 5000Kg Payload

Johnston Sweepers is delighted to announce the launch of its new 5,000 Kg payload option for the C400 mid-sized sweeper, which will be ordered for the very first time at IFAT 2012.

Following the success of the C400 class sweeper in the field, Johnston has increased the payload of the larger GVW machine in the C400 range up to 5,000 Kg, with the GVW increasing from 8.9 to 10.3 tonnes. The change gives the sweeper 25% more capacity, allowing it to compete with larger sweepers for payload while retaining all the manoeuvrability and versatility of a smaller machine.

This innovation has been engineered in response to customer demand for maximum productivity of machines, increasing on-station sweeping time by limiting the need for frequent returns to base.

The High Payload Option is available now on C400 models up to 80k/h, with low or mid-height dump, where local homologation regulations allow.

Brooking Hire has high-end VT800.

Brooking Hire Ltd has taken delivery of the first Johnston VT800 sweeper to be mounted on a luxuriously-appointed Volvo 18T FM Globetrotter chassis, chosen for its driver comfort during extended sweeper hire contracts. The highly-equipped machine features a roomy sleeper cab, leather seats - and even a walnut dashboard - to create a pleasant living environment for Brooking Hire's operators when working away on hire contracts for long periods of time. The Devon-based sweeper hire company has brought the new sweeper as part of its annual vehicle replacement programme, and to boost the fleet to service its latest new contract with the Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Culdrose in Cornwall, where several Brooking Hire sweepers are in constant use. The VT650 truck mounted sweeper will join Brooking Hire's fleet of Johnston sweepers, available for operated hire primarily in the road construction industry. A further smaller fleet is available for self-drive hire, currently on hire to South West Highways. Martin Brooking, Managing Director, has been using Johnston truck mounted sweepers since he founded the company eleven years ago. "We chose this latest VT800 as part of the company's long-standing relationship with Johnston Sweepers, having worked with them for many years", he says. "We know the machines well, like the neat and tidy design, and the spares supply system works well. " He continues, "We see the Volvo Globetrotter cab as the way forward for Brooking Hire. We receive good local back-up from Volvo in Devon and plan to introduce more machines onto the fleet to give us greater flexibility on long-term hire contracts."

P & A Transport (Sweepers) Ltd has taken delivery of two Johnston VT650 sweepers to keep its sweeper hire fleet completely up to date.

The Mid-Glamorgan-based hire company operates a fleet of Johnston sweepers, available for operated hire throughout South Wales. The company primarily specialises in hire to the construction industry, working alongside companies such as Redrow Homes, Barratt Homes and Alun Griffiths Contractors Ltd.

The two new VT650 sweepers are being brought in to replace existing machines as part of P & A Transport's continual vehicle replacement programme, to keep the fleet up to date with the latest sweeping technology.

Paul Davies, Managing Director started the company in 1995 with a pre-used Johnston 600 series sweeper, and has purchased Johnston machines ever since. "We have liked the reliability and performance of the Johnston machines ever since the early days of the 600 series sweepers", he says. "When the V Range was introduced, we decided to continue with Johnston after seeing the VT650 put through its paces in a demonstration, and have since purchased twelve machines - continuing our good relationship with Johnston over seventeen years".

Both machines are supplied on Daf chassis in line with P & A Transport's existing sweeper fleet.

North Ayrshire takes the lead in Scotland

North Ayrshire Council has placed an order with Johnston Sweepers for eight CX201 compact sweepers, taking a lead in Scotland by introducing the versatile smaller machines to its sweeper fleet.

The CX201s are the very first compacts purchased by North Ayrshire, having operated an all-truck mounted sweeper fleet until now, along with most Scottish boroughs. The Council has taken the pioneering step to bring compacts on-fleet to broaden its sweeping capability, and to provide the best value for money for the residents of North Ayrshire.

The Johnston CX201 compacts were chosen principally for their capital investment value, low running costs and fuel efficiency, which allows fuel savings of up to 40% against comparable machines. Positive feedback from operators following demonstrations of the machines, and the manoeuvrability of the slender machines which allows easy access to precincts and narrow residential streets, were also major factors in the Council's selection.

Gordon Mitchell, Transport Manager for North Ayrshire Council, is positive about pioneering a new class of sweeper in the borough. "It is true that compact sweepers do not feature largely in sweeper fleets north of the border, the wider open areas traditionally calling for larger truck mounted machines", he says. "After seeing the sweeping performance and capabilities of the CX201, however, and the efficiency savings we can make, we took the decision to seize the initiative and introduce compacts, and we are pleased to be taking the lead in Scotland towards greater versatility and efficiency in our street cleansing programme."

The new CX201s will be put to work seven days a week in North Ayrshire's precincts and high pedestrian areas, joining the fleet of Johnston VT650 truck mounted machines which are already busy at work in the borough.

Wakefield brings in high-spec VT650s

Wakefield Council has taken delivery of two high specification Johnston VT650 sweepers to support its latest Street Scene street cleansing initiative.

Street Scene was launched in October 2010 and has involved a major restructure of services it delivers across the Wakefield District. This initiative has seen the district split into seven areas, which include twelve priority neighbourhoods across the Council.

The two new Johnston VT650s have been brought in to fulfil the new initiative, and to replace part of the city's sweeper fleet.

Wakefield chose the Johnston machines after reviewing a range of current sweeper models, taking into consideration the environmental impacts of the machines, their capabilities, build quality and overall value for money. Input from operational staff has also been a major factor in the decision process.

Martin Womersley, Street Scene Manager for Street Cleansing, is pleased to be continuing the city's long association with Johnston. "An important aspect of the new Streetscene programme is partnership, and Wakefield has built up a successful relationship with Johnston over the years", he says. "The sweepers are well-made, comfortable, low noise and environmentally friendly, and these latest machines also include a range of features which will optimise the quality and efficiency of our street cleansing regime".

The high specification of the machines includes simultaneous sweep, which allows sweeping from both sides, Powerthrust for heavy duty spot cleaning, extra-large channel brushes for enhanced debris collection and Littersnatch to collect litter from pavements and hedgerows, among a host of additional performance, environmental and safety features. They are also mounted on 18 tonne chasses to cope with the greater distances of the new rounds and to reduce travel to landfill sites.

Feedback from frontline staff is that the vehicles are far superior to previous sweepers, and the overall sweeping and driving performance are rated "very good". The light arrow bars to the rear of the vehicles assist from a safety point of view and frontline staff are also pleased with the automatic gearbox, and are happy with the Iveco chassis and overall sweeping performance.

The new machines are already in busy service, joining four other Johnston trucks which make up Wakefield's all-Johnston truck sweeper fleet.

Johnston's C201 compact triumphs in noise tests

Johnston Sweepers' latest C201 compact is one of the quietest sweepers on the market!

That's the extraordinary finding from a series of noise trials certified by independent Millbrook Proving Ground testers, which scored the C201 at a sound power measurement level of less than 96dB(A) - an exceptionally low level within the sweeper industry.

The trials were held at Farnborough airfield under the supervision of Millbrook staff who witnessed and authenticated the results. Each test was repeated three times and conducted to European standard which includes pick-up requirement, specifically the pick-up of wet newspaper and drinks cans.

The results put Johnston at the very forefront of low noise emissions, with an average sound power measurement of under 96dB(A) at an engine speed of 1000rpm - around the same as an electric lawn mower.*

The noise level inside the cab with the windows closed was also exceptionally quiet, with a measurement of under 70dB(A) at the driver's ear, which is equivalent to the buzz of conversation in a restaurant.*

It is significant to note that for every fewer 3dB(A) measured, the sound power level is halved - an important factor when comparing sweeper noise claims.

The low noise levels are yet another accomplishment for Johnston's best-selling compact range, which has already been proved to use up to 40% less fuel than competitor machines, with all the associated benefits of lower running costs and carbon output.

For any local authority aiming to improve their LEQ scores and achieve the lowest environmental impact in their cleansing regime, the Johnston C201 is clearly the route to go.

Gullivers adds VT650s and latest C201s to expanding fleet

Gullivers Municipal Hire Services has ordered twenty Johnston sweepers, including ten VT650s, three C200s and seven new C201 compacts, to expand its short-term rental fleet.

The order for seven C201s makes Gullivers one of the very first two companies to add the latest model to its growing municipal rental fleet, and is a great vote of confidence for the new machine.

Gullivers bought its first ever Johnston machines back in 2006, and now operates around 4,000 vehicles from eight bases throughout the UK.

The first of the machines will be delivered to the Bristol-based rental company in late summer.

LB Newham orders twenty five Johnston sweepers in run up to 2012

The London Borough of Newham has placed an order for twenty five Johnston sweepers, including two VT650s, four C200s and nineteen CN101s - the largest order for the new subcompact machine so far.

The sale is a big vote of confidence for Johnston, and particularly for the CN101, which Newham chose for its whole-life running costs in terms of fuel, servicing and parts, evaluated as part of the tender process. Central to the machine's low operating cost is its unique 1000 hour service interval - around double that of similar machines - making huge savings on maintenance costs and lost time on-station.

Newham assessed various subcompact sweepers before deciding upon the CN101s, which have been purchased from existing budgets with no additional spending, which will be welcome news for the Borough's residents".

Newham is host to the 2012 Olympics, the majority of the 500 acre Olympic Park being within the borough's boundaries, so the new machines will be kept very busy as the cleansing department steps up its sweeping programme in the run-up to the games. Europe's biggest shopping centre, Westfield Stratford City, also opens later this year, attracting even more visitors to the area.

Dawsonrentals snaps up latest CX201 for its up-to-the-minute sweeper rental fleet

Dawsonrentals has placed an order for 15 CX201 compacts from Johnston Sweepers, making it one of the first UK sweeper hire companies to add the innovative new machines to its extensive rental fleet.

The CX201s will join Dawsonrentals' Johnston-strong fleet of sweepers which includes the V Range, CX400s and CX200s, all of which are available for short term rental and contract hire throughout the UK.

The order puts Dawsonrentals' fleet at the leading edge of sweeping technology once again, having also been the very first company to take delivery of the C201's predecessor, the C200 when it was launched in 2006.

Paul Shires, Dawsonrentals' Financial Director, believes the new model will prove popular with customers. "Johnston's compacts have always formed a significant part of our rental fleet, their fuel economy and carbon footprint being among a number of good selling points for the machines," he says.

"The sweepers are the preferred product of choice for many of our clients, so it makes sense for us to bring the new C201 on to the fleet, allowing us to offer our customers the very latest in sweeping technology, while also continuing our long established relationship with Johnston."

A further order of CX200s placed earlier this year brings the number of machines delivered to the Brighouse-based company in 2011 to over forty.

Johnston launches new C201 best-ever compact

Johnston Sweepers is delighted to announce the launch of its completely new C201 compact sweeper, replacing the current C200 range in the most radical re-design of the popular sweeper since its debut back in 2006.

The new machine looks different, drives differently and has a host of operator-friendly new features, incorporating more than thirty design upgrades over the previous model, while retaining the simple, reliable, low-cost of ownership design concept, for which the range is distinguished.

Sensational manoeuvrability
The most striking aspect of the new machine is its remarkable manoeuvrability, which Johnston's engineers have taken to an unprecedented new level with the introduction of a unique, patented four-wheel steer system option - the first and only of its kind throughout Europe. The ingenious design combines the advantages of four-wheel and articulated steer for sweeping round outside curves, with the already renowned 80o steering lock of Johnston's conventional two-wheel steer for turning on itself. The result is the best of both worlds, giving unprecedented manoeuvrability in any sweeping situation.

The new system switches seamlessly between the two steering modes, automatically selecting four-wheel steer in slow-speed work operation. Initially, the rear wheels turn opposite to the fronts proportionally up to 20o for outside curves at roundabouts and road junctions. But, when a tighter turning circle is needed the front wheels continue to the traditional 80o, turning the machine almost on itself. Two-wheel steer is also automatically selected when the sweeper is in transit mode for more predictable handling at higher speeds. In accommodating the new steering system, Johnston's design team has taken the opportunity to introduce more than thirty design changes to the C201, including an all-new chassis and engine mounting, new-look cab, Glide 2 suspension system, state-of-the-art electronics and a host of new safety and comfort features.

Spacious and stylish new cab
Certainly, the cab is the most immediately eye-catching change, with its distinctive and stylish new look following the 'family look' of the Johnston range. The first thing operators will notice is the impressive visibility, with twenty five percent more glass area to the floor of the cab giving unparalleled views of the nozzle and debris for ease of operation. A nozzle work lamp has also been introduced to illuminate the nozzle during dusk and night-time sweeping. The extra glass area was one of a number of suggestions made by customers when asked what changes they would like to see in Johnston's compact range - proving that the customer is always right! To add to the spacious feel of the interior, the C201 has a new-style roof which gives greater headroom - and looks good too! This, together with newly-designed door trims with integrated armrest, has added light and space inside the cab for a more comfortable ride.

The cab also incorporates a completely new-generation electronics system, giving even greater control of operation. At the heart of the system is a brand new 7" colour screen which displays the speedometer and all the operational information needed by the driver, as well as the diagnostic data for safety and maintenance. The screen doubles up as a reversing camera where this option is selected. As a further enhancement, data capture will be available via the new electronics system, allowing information such as fuel consumption and hours and miles swept to be downloaded via the screen's USB port, giving fleet operators all the information they need to monitor sweeping operations. And for the first time on a UK sweeper, climate control is offered as an option, with the air conditioning and heater systems controlling the environment and maintaining the desired cab temperature, as used in luxury cars. A new 'shuffle' button has also been introduced to the armrest control which allows the machine to shuffle backwards at slow speed to collect any missed debris, without having to select reverse.

Outside the cab, new LED daylight running lamps, similar to those used in luxury cars, have been fitted to meet impending legislation, and the front and side lights have been repositioned for greater safety and visibility. Introducing 'Glide 2' suspension Underneath the machine, Johnston has overhauled its clever Glide suspension to introduce the patented new Glide 2 system. Glide 2 incorporates a single coil on each wheel instead of the dual coil on the previous system. Larger dampers with increased oil capacity and a semi trailing arm have also been introduced, together with dynamic camber as used in motor sport - completely transforming ride and reliability. The new chassis itself has been re-engineered and strengthened, while new engine mounts significantly reduce vibration for ultimate drive comfort. Johnston's design team has even replaced many of the hydraulic pipes throughout the machine, introducing steel piping to maximise reliability - as used successfully on the C400 mid-size sweeper range.

The result is an innovative and stylish new compact sweeper, like none other in the market. Its ingenious steering system, spacious and light cab, clever CanBus electronics, upgraded Glide 2 suspension system and transformed ride quality combine to produce a sweeper at the very top of its class. At the same time, the C201 has inherited all the best features of the outgoing model, including great reliability, low cost of ownership and outstanding fuel consumption.

Clive Offley, Johnston's Engineering Director, believes that customers will be impressed with the new C201. "One of the enduring qualities of Johnston's compact is its agility, having the capability to turn on a sixpence, but this latest steering concept has taken manoeuvrability to a new level and is unique to the market", he says. "The compact has remained one of our most successful sweepers because we have continually developed and refined the design over the years in response to customer feedback and new market ideas", he continues. "In designing the C201 we have taken all the latest ideas a step further to produce a completely new machine with pioneering technology and best-ever ride, comfort and driveability, which we believe will be competitive in Europe and in the UK". Johnston has once again chosen to test the new machine at Millbrook's gruelling Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, where it has undergone a simulated five years of extreme use on Belgian pavé, twist humps, kerb strikes and driveway ramps.

The tests replicate very rapidly the life of the machine and its components, allowing optimum performance and durability to be achieved before launch to the market. The new C201 sweepers will be produced at Johnston's manufacturing plant in Sittingbourne, Kent, and will be available for sale from 22nd June 2011.

Johnston switches to ContiRV20 tyres

Johnston has introduced the revolutionary new Continental RV20 tyre to its C200 compact range of sweepers, designed to reduce whole life tyre cost while also giving exceptional performance and operator comfort. The new ContiRV20 has been developed by Continental with the primary emphasis on reducing whole life costs, achieved through balancing the tread compound to minimise rolling resistance and maximising the strength of the tyre for outstanding damage resistance.

The result is a long-lasting, high productivity tyre which has the added benefit of reducing energy consumption and CO2 output. In developing the new tyre, Continental has also transformed the ride comfort, introducing a new closed shoulder design which significantly improves the steering “feel” over the previous IC70 tyre.

The new tread pattern minimises vibration and gives a smooth road contact for even greater comfort. The new tyre has comparable characteristics to the IC70 tyre previously fitted on Johnston’s C200 compact range, so is fully interchangeable even when mixed on one and the same axle.

The lower life cost of the ContiRV20 dovetails perfectly with Johnston’s drive to reduce emissions and overall cost of ownership across its full range of outdoor sweepers.

Johnston introduces new "slim" VT551 for great value sweeping.

Johnston Sweepers has introduced the new 'slim' VT551 7.5 tonne light-duty truck mounted sweeper to the range, supplying high quality, high payload urban sweeping at great value for money.

The VT551 is designed to be mounted on narrow, lower cost Japanese-produced chassis, including the Mitsubishi Canter which, at just 2m wide, is slimmer and lighter than conventional chassis, increasing payload by 300 kilos while retaining a large hopper capacity of 5.25m3.

The smaller chassis has also made it possible to shorten the wheelbase, giving the VT551 exceptional manoeuvrability for a sweeper in this class. This, together with its high payload, makes the machine ideal for narrow streets and urban sweeping where access is limited.

To offer customers a full range of buying choices, the VT551 will also be available on conventional DAF and Iveco chassis, and is being developed as a skid unit for export all over the world.

Johnston has powered the machine by the new Tier 3a engine, which offers outstanding fuel economy and low CO2 output. In recent tests, the new machine used an astonishing 27% less fuel at 1400rpm than comparable sweepers, representing a saving of up to £4700 over a typical year's sweeping.*

The result is a highly efficient and versatile machine which retains all the performance and reliability customers expect from a Johnston sweeper, at a great value price.

The British built VT551 is being produced at Johnston's Surrey-based manufacturing plant, and goes on sale in December.

* Based on 30 hours sweeping using white diesel, over 48 weeks a year.

Braintree launches Heart of Essex

Braintree District Council has taken delivery of four Johnston Compact sweepers as part of its new Green Heart of Essex initiative, aimed at involving the whole community in improving the environment.

Inspired by local residents, who ranked clean street as one of their biggest priorities for council spending, the Green Heart programme was launched in June and has involved new sweeping schedules and a high-profile campaign to reduce and report littering.

The initiative also includes a large-scale tree planting programme as well as new targets for recycling and composting - all positive moves for the district's NI 185 and 195 ratings.

The new sweepers have been brought in to support the campaign, helping to keep the district clean and tidy while also saving money, thanks to the machines' low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Councillor Chris Siddall, Deputy Cabinet member for Clean, Green and Safe, said, "Preserving the environment is a priority for the council but we know that local people want to live in clean communities, so streets need to be swept.

"As part of the cost and carbon saving programme we have invested in the new sweepers. By actively seeking out greener machines, we will limit our impact on the environment while ensuring the public gets good local street sweeping services."

CX400 Granted EMC Approval

Johnston Sweepers has been awarded EMC approval (Electro-magnetic Compatibility) for its C400 compact sweeper, the first of the range to be tested to meet the latest European Directive.

EMC standards test the level of interference caused by radio frequency emissions generated during vehicle operation. Powerful radio signals have the potential to interfere with the increasingly complex sensitive electrical and electronic systems used in vehicles, presenting a growing safety hazard to drivers - and to the environment.

The directive also assesses the effect of outside sources of electromagnetic fields, including mobile phone masts and power lines, to ensure there are no adverse affects on the vehicle's operation and safety.

Johnston's C400 sweeper passed with flying colours after three days of independent testing by 3C Test at its specialist facility at Silverstone race circuit, and now officially meets European Directive 2009/19/EC and UN ECE Regulation 10.03.

This latest accreditation confirms Johnston's commitment to producing efficient and reliable sweepers which are safe and comfortable for operators and kind to the environment.

Johnston launches new parts service

Johnston Sweepers' Customer Service Division has announced big changes to its parts supply service as part of a programme of major investment in the company's after sales support facilities for customers.

The changes follow a thorough review of the company's parts supply system, which looked at stock availability, speed of supply and delivery arrangements for spare parts supporting the company's sweeper range.

The new service makes the radical move from a forecasting process to a sales history and seasonal trend inventory system, and is designed to increase first-time availability of parts to 95%.

More good news is that customers will now be able to order parts from the Dorking service centre up to 4.00pm Monday to Friday and receive free guaranteed next day delivery anywhere in mainland UK.

To support the new system, Dorking is investing £1.4 million in additional parts stock and expanding the warehouse by almost 20% to improve availability across its 18,000 listed parts range, representing a significant commitment to its after sales service.

Johnston opens a new depot at Redbridge

Johnston Sweepers has opened a brand new London-based service centre at Redbridge in Essex, adding to its extensive nationwide service network to provide even faster after sales support facilities for customers.

Situated north-east on the North Circular, the Redbridge depot will reduce travel times for call-outs within the M25, supplying a faster and more efficient service for London-based customers.

The new depot is a fully equipped engineering centre, incorporating state-of-the-art workshop facilities with secure storage, and is able to provide a full range of servicing and major repairs.

Johnston's network of service depots around the country is unique to the UK sweeper industry, with six regional centres providing local service support and parts availability. Each centre also operates a team of mobile Service Technicians, providing Johnston customers with a service and parts coverage unequalled in the UK.

Go Plant orders thirty three

Go Plant orders thirty three Johnston sweepers for Salford contract and growing spot hire fleet.

Go Plant Ltd has placed an order for thirty three sweepers from Johnston Sweepers in a tremendous show of confidence in Johnston's products. The order is made up of nineteen VT650 truck mounted sweepers and fourteen CX200 compacts, with delivery commencing in late spring.

Twelve of the CX200 compacts are for supply to Salford City Council in Greater Manchester, as part of a three-yearly fleet replacement programme agreed when Go Plant won the nine year Salford contract in 2007. The order of high specification machines means that the council will continue with an all-Johnston fleet of Compact sweepers for the next three years.

Three of the VT650 truck sweepers are to be supplied to South West Sweepers in Cornwall, with the remaining sixteen machines joining Go Plant's growing spot hire fleet.
The final two CX200s compacts will immediately go out on short term rental to Cheshire West.

The order affirms the long-standing relationship between Go Plant Ltd and Johnston Sweepers, and is a great lift for sales at a time when the domestic market is still in the doldrums.

Go Plant Ltd operates a Johnston-strong fleet of more than 150 sweepers available for contract or spot hire, and is the UK's market leader for operated vehicle rentals.

New CN101 goes on tour

Johnston Sweepers is taking its brand new CN101 sub compact sweeper on tour in April for a series of road shows to publicise its launch.

The CN101 1m3 sub compact is the latest addition to Johnston's range of street cleansing vehicles, designed for sweeping in urban and pedestrian areas where space is confined. It combines high level performance and driver comfort with a low carbon footprint and remarkably low cost of ownership, thanks to its efficient design and uniquely long 1000 hour service intervals.

Events to show off the new sweeper are being held in Gateshead, Leeds, Kings Lynn and Translinc, where customers and council members will be invited to see the new sweeper in action.

The events will give customers the opportunity to ride and drive the acclaimed new machines for themselves, and also to hear from the CIWM Business Club with whom the shows are being staged.

Johnston Sweepers is delighted to announce the launch of its brand new CN101 1m3 sub compact sweeper, the latest addition to its wide range of street cleansing vehicles.

Entering the range as a new lightweight sub compact class, the 1m3 CN101 is an exceptionally manoeuvrable and versatile machine, ideal for sweeping in urban and pedestrian areas where space is confined. It combines high performance, low cost of ownership and outstanding operator comfort, all in an environmentally friendly package.

Among the significant features of the CN101 is its high sweeping performance and, in particular, its low cost of ownership, the simplicity of its design allowing uniquely long service intervals representing four times fewer services over the life of the sweeper when compared to other machines in its class.

High performance with superior manoeuvrability.

At the heart of the CN101 is a powerful Deutz 3-cylinder, low emission diesel engine, teamed with front facing brushes and a choice of front wheel or four wheel steer to produce a high powered machine with outstanding agility.

The four wheel steer option is unique to the CN101 and reduces the turning circle to an unparalleled 3.9 metres, giving the sweeper manoeuvrability which is considerably superior to any other machine in its class.

Drive is supplied through an infinitely variable hydrostatic transmission system which delivers a highly smooth and responsive control system, incorporating progressive "anti lock" hydrostatic braking for safe and comfortable handling.

The front facing brushes are independently controlled, reaching around street furniture with ease, and allowing complete clearance of 90 degree corners and dead ends. The machine also features a high tipping point allowing the hopper to discharge into standard collection receptacles.

Low cost of ownership

Thanks to its design simplicity the CN101 offers outstanding cost efficiency benefits which, when added to its considerable environmental savings, make it hard to beat for overall cost of ownership.

Central to the low operating cost is its remarkable 1000 hour service interval - around four times longer than that of similar machines - providing huge savings on maintenance costs and lost time on station.

Additionally, as with all Johnston sweepers, the CN101 is designed to operate at low engine rpm, significantly reducing fuel consumption, with the added benefits of less noise, lower emissions and less wear and tear.

Easy access to the key service parts is integral to the design of the CN101, allowing the machine to be maintained quickly and efficiently, reducing costly machine downtime even further.

The result of these clever design innovations is a sweeper that incorporates incomparable environmental efficiencies and significant ownership cost savings that any fleet manager would find hard to surpass.

Operator Comfort

Every aspect of the CN101 has been designed with operator comfort and ease of operation in mind.

The chassis features independent coil springs and dampers to the front and rubber cone suspension to the rear, delivering outstanding ride comfort, as well as low vibration and safe kerb climbing.

The light and spacious cab includes generous leg and head room, and is soundproofed for maximum comfort.

Visibility from the driver's seat is excellent through the wide-view heated windscreen, providing clear sight of the brushes, debris and obstacles.

An air suspended seat, adjustable steering column, ergonomic controls and heated rear view mirrors are also included to optimise operator comfort and safety during sweeper operation.

Environmentally friendly

In addition to the low engine rpm and resulting fuel consumption, emissions and noise benefits, the CN101 has been designed with all the environmental considerations expected from a Johnston sweeper.
A water recycling system is fitted as standard, allowing the water to be re-used. The system reduces water consumption significantly, while extending sweeping time by eliminating the need for frequent returns to base./n/n /n/nThe CN101 is also fuel efficient, a low consumption rate and large tank allowing it to spend more time working and less in transit, while its low noise emissions make the CN101 ideal for working in enclosed environments.

The CN101 is also certified to the latest EUnited PM10 dust emission standards for the comfort and safety of the public and the operator.

Hat-trick of BSI Awards

Latest BS 18001 accreditation gives Johnston Sweepers full hat-trick of BSI awards.

Johnston Sweepers has been awarded BS OHSAS 18001 accreditation, the international standard for occupational health and safety systems, by the British Standards Institute.
The accreditation puts Johnston in the distinctive position within the manufacturing sector of now having the full hat-trick of internationally recognised standards, having already gained ISO 9001 for quality systems and ISO 14001 for environmental management.

The prestigious award comes after an in-depth assessment by BSI Inspectors in which they examined every aspect of Johnston's occupational health and safety management systems, before announcing that they would be recommending the award.

The standard specifies the requirements to enable an organisation to control its health and safety risks and improve its performance. With a large element of the standard covering the legislative aspects of health and safety systems, the accreditation process took a full year for the Johnston team, despite the exemplary health and safety systems already in place.

Commenting on the accreditation, Coen Van Rosmalen, General Manager of Johnston Sweepers, said, "I am delighted that we have been awarded the BS 18001 standard as it confirms we have all the systems in place to protect our staff and visitors, and give our customers confidence in Johnston's on-going commitment to excellence in its business practices."
